Test Preparation

The Skills needed for Success

The Bastian Learning Program is based on the motto:  Focus, Retain, Perform. Focus is key to learning material the first time it is presented. Especially necessary for excelling in math, each concept is built upon another. If one retains the information already learned, there is no need to review. With the wealth of information a student can gain in a day, a week, a year, performing will be easy and stress-free. For those who doubt, who agonize over every single test, learning to deal with hard questions easily may be useful. Therefore, investing in a good test prep course before high school is definitely worth considering.  For those who want to ace standardized tests to get into a good college or program, the Bastian Learning Program may be what makes the biggest difference.

Certified teachers, including Mrs. Susan Farmer, instruct students in Science, Math, Reading Comprehension and Writing. Teachers create hands-on projects, group activities and small group discussions and challenges. Because the tests change, the curricula adjusts every year. Interns from TJHSST and PWCS assist instructors.

Students complete interesting science projects and learn to interact with the world. Technology-based science websites give students the chance to learn about the environment through communicating with millions of Citizen Scientists. The Fold-a-Scope Project is one of these Projects.

The Bastian Learning Program prepares students for testing by offering practice sessions, in test conditions. After each test session, certified teachers and skilled interns review the test. This is the time when instruction is necessary to make sure students understand how to answer the questions correctly and quickly.

CEO/Director

Mrs. Suzie Bastian

Mrs. Bastian received a BS from Cornell University in 1989 in Child Development & Family Studies.

After receiving her degree, Mrs. Bastian started teaching preschool in New Jersey. She spent many years teaching while raising her 4 sons. After the local middle school lost it’s MathCounts coach, Mrs. Bastian decided to help the club as coach to keep the team going until her younger 2 sons could attend in 6 years. She learned the math skills for the MathCounts Program and volunteered as a scorer and photographer for the local, state and national competitions. When Mrs. Bastian’s two youngest sons wanted to apply to TJHSST, like their older brother, Mrs. Bastian decided to coach them and some of their friends who were also interested in attending TJ.

The program was very small at first, but the demand for test prep grew over the years as more students were admitted to TJHSST who attended Mrs. Bastian’s classes. Registrations now exceeds 100 students per summer and 100 8th grade students in the fall.
